FROM THE UK to ENTEBBE AIRPORT (Uganda)

Most companies operate from all major British airports (inc. London, Belfast, Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham). The major operators are British Airways, Kenya Airways, KLM and Ethiopian Airlines. Obviously all flights are subject to change. The best comparison websites at time of writing are skyscanner.net and flightcentre.co.uk. Also, take a look at tripadvisor.co.uk and flights2entebbe.co.uk. Note that the latter website does NOT display current flights but is a database of prices and should be used as a means of researching the best fares.

Of course, you could always fly to Nairobi Airport in Kenya with Virgin Atlantic
and simply take a bus (24hrs) to Kampala - an adventure in itself :)

If you book early you will definitely get a better deal. At the time of writing we have seen some flights for less than £500.

FROM EUROPE

It is best to check your national airlines operator. International comparison websites include skyscanner.net and tripadvisor.com. Look for flights to Entebbe or Nairobi.

FROM THE U.S.

Direct flights from the US to Africa are usually more expensive than those via Europe just because you have far fewer flights and they fill up more quickly. A few examples of direct flights can be found below. For a comprehensive list see goafrica.about.com/od/africatraveltips/a/Direct-Flights-From-The-Us-To-Africa.html

Airlines

Delta Airlines
currently flies to Dakar (Senegal), Cairo (Egypt) and Accra (Ghana) from JFK, and to Johannesburg (South Africa) and Lagos (Nigeria) from Atlanta.
South African Airways
fly direct to Johannesburg (South Africa) from JFK and Washington DC.
EgyptAir
flies direct to Cairo (Egypt) from JFK
Royal Air Morocco
flies direct to Casablanca (Morocco) from JFK.
Ethiopian Airlines
fly direct from Washington DC to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) four times a week. You fly via Rome and briefly refuel, but you don't get off the plane.
United Airlines
have a daily service from Washington DC to Accra (Ghana) (starting June 20, 2010)
Arik Air
based in Nigeria, flies from JFK to Lagos (Nigeria) three times a week. You have to e-mail to make a booking

Obviously you will need to book an internal flight in Africa. Check tripadvisor.com
, skyscanner.net and search for Kenya Airways, South Africa Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines.

You can also use cheaptickets.com
and plug in your whole itinerary, it will piece together flights via Europe for you.

Book your flight at least two months
in advance especially if you are planning to travel around Christmas. Flights fill up very quickly because they are relatively limited compared to many other world destinations.

FLY VIA EUROPE

Ask your travel agent to look into flights from Europe to Africa (especially Amsterdam, Rome, London and Paris) and  then add on a flight from the US. This can work very well during the off-season when flights between Europe and the US are very inexpensive  (November to mid-December and January to March).

FROM AUSTRALIA

Book your flight at least two months in advance especially if you are planning to travel around Christmas. Flights fill up very quickly because  they are relatively limited compared to many other world destinations.

Check flightcentre.com.au/travel/flights/general-enquiry/Africa
, cheapflights.com and jetabroad.com.au for price comparisons. Expect to pay around AU$1,300 usually to Cairo or Johannesburg direct and less than a few hundred or less for an internal flight from there.  Check skyscanner.net for internal flights or look for Kenya Airways, South Africa Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines.

Again, ask your travel agent or contact the airlines directly and ask for options to fly via Europe or the middle east (esp. Dubai).
