Mgahinga National Park

Activities > Gorillas

Mgahinga is situated in south western Uganda, in the Kisoro district, a few km south of Bwindi national park and about 10km west of Kabale on the Uganda-Rwanda border. Besides gorilla trekking, the park offers a broader range of activities than any of the other gorilla reserves including caving, forest walks and day hikes to the three volcanic peaks. Day visitation fees are c.US$25/35/50 for 1/2/3 nights.

The park has one habituated gorilla group (Nyakagyezi). Note that this group is mobile and sometimes crosses into Rwanda and DRC, so check for updates from Uganda Wildlife Authority before booking or visit Bwindi instead (see ‘Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’)

From the orphanage, a bus to Kabale from Fort Portal is the best option to get to Mgahinga if you don’t have your own transportation. From Kabale, local matatus or special hire taxis will take you to Kisoro and from there to the Ntebeko Park entrance. The entrance is approximately 14km from Kisoro.

It is possible to visit Mgahinga as a day trip from one of the lodges in Kisoro, but it's more atmospheric to stay in the accommodation at the Ntebeko Entrance gate. There are two options: Mount Gahinga Rest Camp (+256 (0)414 346464) at US$180 sharing a twin!!  Or the more reasonably priced Mgahinga Community Campground at US$11 per banda bed or US$2 to camp.
