Rwenzori is the highest mountain in Uganda and can be seen from the campsite! Its loftiest  peaks, Margherita (5,109) and Alexandra (5,083) are bettered only by Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. The Rwenzori mountain range is thought to be the source of the legend of the Mountains of the Moon, the snow-capped mountain range cited as the source of  the Nile by the Roman geographer Ptolemy in AD 150.

The Rwenzoris are primarily known for its hiking but the range also supports a diversity of animals including 70 mammals and 177 bird species (including the Rwenzori turaco). Rwenzoris is an exhilarating and rewarding experience which must be well planned.  The key to an enjoyable visit is to be prepared! The central hike circuit takes six nights or seven days and reaches an altitude of 14,000ft.(4,267m) above sea level. The conditions on the mountain are a challenge to even an experienced hiker and  are considered tougher than the ascents of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.

A typical 7 day, 6 night hike costs US $500. Try the organisation called
Rwenzori Trekking Services (+256 (0)774 114 499 or email: which has its base camp at Rwenzori Backpackers Hostel in Kilembe (+256 (0)774 199 022 or email:

The Nyakalengija trailhead is 22km northwest of Kasese and the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is signposted off the tarmac Fort Portal highway about 8km out of Kasese. It is probably best to get to Kasese from Fort Portal and arrange a special hire taxi thereafter.
